Kawai 5 Oh!

It's not often I wax lyrical about upright pianos but I played one the other night in sunny Huddersfield and I have to say it was tremendous. I believe it's something to do with titanium scansons connected to the turbanfolds or somesuch, but whatever it is they've done, it makes it great fun to play. It's not often talked about but I am convinced that for me anyway, half the success of a performance lies with the piano itself. If how it feels and how it sounds doesn't inspire you, then what chance do the fellows you are working with have of communicating with you on their terms? Chances are they are playing they're own instruments and they know what they can and cannot do. The poor beleaguered piano player has to take his chances with whatever is supplied and there has been many an occasion where I've come away at the end of a gig feeling as though I've not only shortchanged the band, but more importantly, the paying punters. Anyway, if all uprights were as good as this one, the problem would disappear and there would be a whole new generation of smiling piano players up and down the land. Oh dear, what a thought.........

Seventh time lucky

So it was with light heart and a skip in my step that I set off to Gainsborough last Tuesday to pick up another glittering prize in the shape of a certificate telling me I had won the piano category in this year's British Jazz Awards. To those of you who voted for me, many thanks.
